ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The subject of Il Gioco del Vento e della Luna was taken by the librettist Maria del Pilar Garcia from the pages of a classic of Chinese erotic literature, The Prayer Carpet of Flesh by Lü Yi, a long ‘forbidden’ text from which a somewhat bizarre film was made in 1991, but nonetheless a cult in the ‘hot’ genre, such as Sex and Zen by Michael Mak (as well as, just twenty years later, the weak ‘remake’ Sex and Zen 3D: Extreme Ecstasy). In reality, here the work of Lü Yu – exaltation of the most unbridled carnal pleasures, lived without the encumbrance of the Western concept of sin – is freely transformed and simplified by Garcia into a thin but witty plot, which sees the protagonist Cleric of the First Vigil. search for a perfect bride, looking for her among the most attractive girls in the country. He searches very difficult, because man appears insatiable; at least until the two matchmakers Mamma Liu and Mamma Ma offer him the very young and graceful Nobile Profumo, who has always lived enclosed within the home and jealously guarded by his father Padchetto di Ferro. Taken by her graces, the Cleric of the First Vigil marries her immediately; but since she appears absolutely inexperienced in the “game of the wind and the moon” (poetic paraphrase of ardent amorous embraces) the trouble immediately begins. And in fact, having even terrified her with the “jade sword”, it is necessary to instruct her slowly with the providential help of a book of erotic illustrations, freeing her from her fears and finally coming to savor her much coveted fruit. Too bad, however, that, immediately afterwards, the man is called to arms, so that the young bride – exultant to have discovered the pleasures of her passion – is left with nothing but comfort with the clumsy servant of the house. freeing her from her fears and finally coming to savor the much coveted fruit.
