  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Ifigenia in Aulide is an opera seria in three acts by Antonio Caldara (music) with a libretto by Apostolo Zeno . It premiered on December 28, 1718, on the name day of Emperor Charles VI, at the Vienna Court Theatre.

Act One. Before their campaign against Troy , the Greek troops gather in Aulis at the court of King Agamemne. A prolonged calm prevents them from departing. The oracle has prophesied that Agamemne’s daughter Ifigenia must be sacrificed to end the calm. Agamemne reluctantly agrees and sends a message to his wife Clytemnestra in Argos . She is to come to Aulis with her daughter to marry her to the warrior Achilles. At the beginning of the opera, Achilles arrives. He has recently conquered Lesbos and taken the princess Elisena captive, intending to deliver her to his friend Teucer , who loves her. However, on the journey, Elisena has fallen in love with her captor Achilles, who, in turn, thinks only of his bride Ifigenia. The heartbroken Elisena contemplates suicide in the temple. Shortly afterward, Clytemnestra and Ifigenia also arrive. Agamemone has since developed a guilty conscience and made a futile attempt to warn them. However, his letter was intercepted by Ulysses ( Odysseus ). He now has no choice but to carry out the sacrifice. Achilles, Clitennestra, and Ifigenia know nothing of all this. Furthermore, the arrival of his bride has been kept secret from Achilles.

Act Two. Several scenes of jealousy and misunderstandings arise between Ifigenia, Elisena, and Achilles. Nevertheless, Teucro remains committed to Elisena. To prevent Clitennestra from witnessing the sacrifice, Agamennone attempts to send her away under a pretext, but she refuses. Agamennone’s confidant, Arcade, reveals the whole truth to Achilles and the two women. They all want to prevent the sacrifice. While Achilles is seething with rage and wants to kill Agamennone, Ifigenia decides to try pleading first.

Act Three. After Ifigenia’s pleas prove fruitless, she resigns herself to her fate. Nevertheless, Clitennestra persuades her husband to attempt a rescue. He leaves it to Arcade to bring Ifigenia to safety. However, the fugitives are first tracked down by Teucro and then by Elisena and Ulisse. Ifigenia is taken to the temple. Before the sacrifice, Achilles overcomes the guards and tries to free Ifigenia by force. At that moment, the priest Calcante, in the voice of the oracle, announces that Elisena is in fact the intended sacrifice—she is the daughter of Elena and Theseo and is also actually named Ifigenia. She goes to the altar and takes her own life. With this, the gods are appeased, and the Greeks can depart for Troy.
