Full Program

In the second part of the “Celebration of Black Music” initiated by Thomas Hampson, several generations of Afro-American artists have their say: From Florence Price and William Grant Still to Tyshawn Sorey and BE Boykin, the concert presents a polyphonic panorama of “Black Music” in its infinitely many and fascinating facets.

“I know why the caged bird sings” – “I know why the caged bird sings”. He sings about freedom so as not to lose hope. To encourage yourself and others. He sings to feel life and forget his cage. And so to this day, composers and authors with African roots sing and write poetry: of discrimination and injustice, of pride and dignity – but also of love and separation, sadness and joy, faith and hope.
