ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
In April 1950, nine women gather to celebrate the 60th birthday of Mrs. Kim, the matriarch of a noble family in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do: her eldest daughter, Geum-shil; her second daughter, Park-shil, who has married in Daegu; her youngest daughter, Bong-ah; her eldest daughter-in-law, Jang-rim; her second daughter-in-law, Yeong-ju; her aunt, Kwon; Dokgol Halmae, the housekeeper; and Hong-dari, the woman she raised. Instead of a grand feast, Mrs. Kim suggests a “Hwajeonnori” (flower viewing) event, where they make pancakes out of flower petals and go on a flower-viewing trip. The night before, they stay up all night, sharing chocolate and coffee, and sharing stories about their lives and families. Their husbands and sons are in prison or missing. They live their lives, filling their empty spaces. Having endured their difficult lives, these women neither pity nor judge each other. Instead, they show themselves as pillars of support, each able to lean on the other.
