ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
December 16th marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Soviet and Russian composer Georgy Sviridov.
Georgy Sviridov achieved worldwide fame and entered the pantheon of truly immortal creators who transcended the boundaries of space and time. His music remains relevant, fresh, and in demand even today, after almost 30 years of his passing.
For Helikon Opera, the work of Georgy Sviridov is of colossal importance. Sviridov’s worldview, which believed that there are no strangers to music, reflects the philosophy of our The theater, and, of course, Helikon, could not ignore such a significant date. We are confident that if there is an opportunity to vividly remind society of the rare pages of our 20th-century Russian genius’s work, it is worth any effort.
The concert “Georgy Sviridov. Holy Love” is comparable in scale and power to the personality of the composer himself. Conductor Artem Davydov, the mastermind and musical director of this grand project, combined two of the most important layers of the Russian genius’s work in the program: the rarely performed monumental musical canvas “Pathetique Oratorio” and works recognizable from the first note: “Time, Forward!”, “Snowstorm,” and “Holy Love.”
“Georgy Vasilyevich Sviridov is Russia itself; it’s hard for me to imagine a more Russian composer,” says Artem Davydov. “He writes in a language we think in, not just hear and speak in, today and now. Sviridov’s music is as contemporary as “never, because it features today’s WE, and, of course, he is one of my favorite composers.”
The “Oratorio Pathétique,” which premiered on October 15, 1959, was met with incredible enthusiasm, but is rarely performed today—it requires a huge choir of 200 people (such was the composer’s requirement).
On December 16, at the Stravinsky Hall, the choir and orchestra of the Helikon Opera Theater, together with members of the Grand Combined Choir of the Mendeleev Choral Congress, will perform this magnificent work.
The unique Combined Choir, directed for many years by maestro Boris Tarakanov, comprises seven different ensembles. They are united by a profound love for choral art, sincere enthusiasm, and a belief in the power of spiritual singing.
The oratorio is based on works by Vladimir Mayakovsky: fragments from the poem “Good!”, the poems “Left March,” and “Conversation with Comrade Lenin.” “The Last Page of the Civil War,” “The Story of Kuznetskstroy and the People of Kuznetsk,” and “An Extraordinary Adventure That Became Vladimir Mayakovsky One Summer at His Dacha.” A key role in this magnificent work is played by the solo bass (as Sviridov intended, this is Mayakovsky himself)—it will be performed by Honored Artist of Russia Dmitry Skorikov. Also performing in “Pathetic Oratorio” will be Helikon Opera star and People’s Artist of Russia Larisa Kostyuk.
“Georgy Sviridov. Holy Love” at Helikon is a unique event. It is a celebration of a great citizen and creator, for it is people like Sviridov who enable our country to exist, fight, develop, and achieve new achievements and victories.
