In the original score, Tim Rescala incorporated elements of the popular musical universe of the era depicted in the novel, such as Brazilian songs, boleros, and radio hits, into the traditional operatic discourse, creating a hybrid work between opera and musical.

The novel by the Minas Gerais writer tells the story of Hilda, a beautiful and rebellious young woman who breaks with expectations by abandoning her prestigious life and taking refuge in the bohemian area of the capital of Minas Gerais. Her journey intertwines with that of Friar Malthus, a young religious man determined to transform the lives of the region’s inhabitants. This encounter triggers a series of ethical and social conflicts, a clash between desire and duty, freedom and morality. A narrative that finds in opera the perfect language for its dramatic development, joining the pantheon of great heroines of the genre, such as Carmen and Aída, and consolidating the path toward the creation of a national opera that engages with our history, colors, and sounds.

“Hilda has all the elements to become an opera: a compelling and tragic plot, strong characters, and a powerful emotional charge,” says composer Tim Rescala. For conductor Rodrigo Toffolo, “Hilda is a perfect protagonist for this cycle of Brazilian operas that the Ouro Preto Orchestra has been developing. She is a strong female character, with profound reflections on freedom, destiny, and social impositions.”
