Hemma, a wealthy aristocrat, wed Count Wilhelm von Friesach. Wilhelm lives addicted to pleasure, dissolute and self-sufficient and does not conform to any order. Since they will not have children, Hemma promises to change her life when she becomes a mother. She gives birth to two sons. The miners revolt. The sons brutally punish the leaders, whereupon the workers set a trap for them. They are captured and vow to get better, but do not adhere to it. Unjust mistreatment occurs again. Now popular anger breaks out, the sons are lynched. Hemma urges her husband to reconcile. But he is adamant and has all the miners slaughtered. Hemma realizes the sins of vanity, vengeance and materialistic thinking. Desperate, she turns to God
