ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
An exploration of the life of Ivor Gurney, from the time of his discharge from the army in 1918 to his death in an asylum in 1937. This concert will explore Gurney’s search for solace through his music and his poetry.
The programme includes a number of unpublished songs and poems written while Gurney was in the asylum, some of which have never been performed before. This concert aims to shine a light on the sufferings of those with mental health issues, a subject that still today is clouded with stigma and misunderstanding. Philip Lancaster, editor of the forthcoming complete edition of Gurney’s poetry, is the consultant for this concert.
