ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The Rostov Musical Theater hosted the premiere of the opera “Gypsy”, based on the book by Anatoly Kalinin. The director of the play Yuri Alexandrov transferred the well-known characters of Budulai and Klavdia to our days: the hero took part in hostilities in the Caucasus, and the gypsies are engaged in drug trafficking.

The music for “Gypsy” was written by the Rostov composer Leonid Klinichev. It took him several years to create the opera. The novel by Anatoly Kalinin, on which a popular movie was once filmed, received a very unexpected modern sound.

“There are two main lines in the opera,” says Tatyana Yurasova, head of the theater’s musical department. – On the one hand, this is a lyrical line taken directly from the novel and connected with Budulai’s personal life: the loss of a wife, the birth of a son, who is taken up by a Russian woman. On the other hand, it is a conflict between Cossacks and Gypsies. Although the reason for the clash is not just national differences, but the fact that the Roma are involved in drug trafficking. The worst thing is that they sell their potion in schools. This arouses the justified anger of local residents, primarily the Cossacks. During the mass scenes, stylized folk Cossack and Gypsy songs are played, which, in my opinion, were very successful for Leonid Klinichev.
