ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
This is one of four operas presented in capsule form in the Italian-made “First Opera Film Festival.” While it is lip synched to pre-recorded tracks, It features chorus, orchestra, and dancers of the Rome Opera and is filmed on the stage of the Teatro dell’Opera with sets and costumes from the real production (this one dates from at least the late 1920s). Gabriella Gatti was THE leading Mathilde in all four revivals at Rome from 1939–49. Tito Gobbi would eventually sing the title role with the company at their Caracalla presentations in 1953 and ’57, alongside Fillipeschi and Neri. Giulio Tomei had been the Gessler in the most recent Rome presentation, as well. Probably because he made few commercial recordings, José Soler is still not widely known. He had been a telephone operator in Uruguay, when at the age of 40(!), he made a sensation first as a concert singer and then in heroic roles like Radames, Manrico, etc. throughout Central/South America and Italy.
