ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Giovanna Casolla (born 15 January 1945, in Naples) is an Italian operatic soprano. She studied at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella of Naples, and made her debut at the Spoleto Festival in 1977. She played the title role in Turandot at the Forbidden City in 1998. She has appeared frequently with the Boston Opera and the Baltimore Opera.

Opera critic Giancarlo Landini has called Mrs. Casolla the “Turandot” reference in decades”. It is no coincidence that Zubin Mehta has billed her as a protagonist in the 1998 edition of the magnificent opera by Puccini, set in the Forbidden City of Beijing and directed by Zhang Yimou. Returning in 2008 to inaugurate the New Lyric Theater in Beijing, she opened Puccini’s colossal masterpiece with the new finale written by Chinese composer Hao Weiya.

Mrs. Casolla career, which kicks off the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto with Napoli Milionaria written by maestro Rota, directed by the great Eduardo (opera broadcast worldwide by RAI and the proposal which premiered at the Spoleto Festival), is full of successes linked to major titles in her repertoire: Inter Alia, Tosca (for over 500 performances), Fanciulla del West, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Fedora, Giorgetta in Tabarro, Maddalena in Andrea Chenier, Eboli in Don Carlo, Manon Lescaut, Gioconda, Leonora in La Forza del Destino, Carmen, Wally, and Adriana Lecouvreur.
He success includes three world premieres: Napoli Milionaria (Nino Rota), Il marchese di Roccaverdina (Dino Milella, played in 1978) and Salvatore Giuliano (Lorenzo Ferrero, 1986, Opera di Roma). Furthermore, she was the first to bring Romeo and Juliet by Zandonai to the United States.

The last character to enter her busy schedules is Amneris, and she also played this role in Aida directed by Bob Wilson and conducted by Daniel Oren, who inaugurated the 2008 season of the Opera di Roma. Having received enthusiastic acclaims at the Arena di Verona in the summer of 2009, Mrs. Casolla returns to dive into the role of the Pharaoh’s daughter in the next season of Caracalla.

She has sung under many batons of our time: from Muti to Gavazzeni, from Sinopoli to Mehta, Maazel to Oren and Myung-Whun Chung.
Mrs. Casolla has performed in major theaters throughout the world including La Scala, the Metropolitan, at the Liceu in Barcelona (Turandot has been in production which reopened the theater after the fire), Colon in Buenos Aires, at the Vienna Staatsoper, the Arena di Verona, Bayerische Staatsoper in Monaco, the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, to the Orange Festival, and Avenches and Torre del Lago.

She has also sung with all the most famous tenors of the world, including the top three tenors: Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras.
Some of the awards she has received throughout her career include the Illica Award, the Cilea prize and the Ester Mazzoleni prize.
