ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

The complete 1962 photo-novel (fotoromanzo) in 400 frames in English with Italian subtitles (the original Italian text) + Underappreciated studio curiosities (arias and songs)

The photo-novel was originally published in 1962 in the weekly magazine Grand Hotel in serialised episodes. It is based on the play of the same name by Alexandre Dumas Jr. (who also wrote Lady of the Camellias, the basis for Traviata), but I should say in advance not to expect too much from the story, it is a bit (VERY) soap-opera like, but still very aesthetic and fun, and provided Franco with the perfect opportunity unwind from the pressures of singing opera but still “flex his actorial muscles” — and for us to admire his talents beyond his voice. 🙂

I’m pushing this awkward format for a comic book reading precisely because I want to do what I think he was trying to achieve with all of this: to arouse the interest of those who are not necessarily opera fans and to get them to listen and follow him as a singer.

I have therefore specifically tried to select musical excerpts that are “underappreciated”, or at least I get the impression that a majority of fans rarely, if ever, listen to them, so kind of “gourmet delicacies”.
Most of them are from the Cetra aria albums recorded in the late ’50s, the 1961 Neapolitan Songs collection (cond. Franco Ferraris) and the 1965 Romantic Songs album (cond. Raffaele Mingardo), so you’ll hear opera arias and songs in Italian, Neapolitan, French and Spanish.

Have fun!
