    PROGRAMME:

Lars-Erik Larsson’s God in Disguise is a deeply moving combination of poetry and music. With Hjalmar Gullberg’s text at its core, this beloved cantata weaves a story of divine humanity, humility and compassion, revolving around universal themes of love and kindness. Tomas von Brömssen narrates.

First, we hear a rare piece by Valborg Aulin from her Missa sollemnis, a peaceful and profound appeal for eternal rest. It offers a sample of Aulin’s talent and sensitivity, as one of Sweden’s pioneering female composers.

The concert concludes with Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3, Sinfonia Espansiva, which was composed during a period of personal and creative growth. Nielsen was a great inspiration for Larsson, and in the idyllic second movement, references to God in Disguise is heard. Together, these works emanate a sense of expansiveness – a spirit, energy and humanity – that culminates in a radiant celebration of life.

Förklädd gud (opus 24) is a lyrical suite from 1940 by Lars-Erik Larsson , with lyrics by Hjalmar Gullberg . It belongs to Larsson’s neo-romantic oriented production and is one of the best-known works of Swedish classical music .

The suite has been part of Sweden’s cultural canon since 2025.

Both Larsson and Gullberg were employed by Swedish Radio at the beginning of the 1940s , and the piece was written to be performed on the radio.

The premiere took place on April 1, 1940 on Swedish Radio. The soloists were Kerstin Torlind and Hugo Hasslo . Olof Molander was the reciter. The radio choir and the Radio Service entertainment orchestra were conducted by the composer.

The text is taken from Gullberg’s poetry collection Love in the Twentieth Century from 1933. Gullberg’s idyll takes its starting point from a motif from ancient mythology about the god Apollo , condemned to appear as a human for a year and serve as a servant to King Admetus in Thessaly , in Euripides’ drama Alcestis.
