Work by Heitor Villa-Lobos composed in 1958, one of his last compositions.
Commissioned by Metro Goldwin Mayer for the soundtrack of the film Green Mansions , by Mel Ferrer and starring Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins , which was released in Brazil with the title A Flor que não Morreu. Villa-Lobos was not satisfied with the editing and modifications made to the piece by fellow composer Bronislau Kaper to synchronize it on film and decided to transform it into a symphonic suite. The film was a failure, but the friction between Villa-Lobos and the film studio resulted in the financing of the recording carried out in 1959, with the author himself conducting and the recently retired and legendary soprano Bidu Sayão, later interpreted by Maria Lucia Godoy.
Some of the soloist songs in the work, such as “Melodia Sentimental” and “Canção de Amor”, became the composer’s best known, being interpreted by renowned opera singers, such as Roberta Alexander and Kathleen Battle . In 1989, soprano Renée Fleming , still at the beginning of her career, recorded the complete suite conducted by Alfred Heller. In 1987, a free creation was recorded over the original for piano, one of many unpublished manuscripts by Villa-Lobos. Some popular singers, such as Maria Bethânia , Ney Matogrosso , Djavan and Zizi Possi , sang one or more of the songs in adapted versions.
