Ewiger Walzer – long title Eternal Waltz – Women around Johann Strauss or Eternal Waltz – The Strauss Dynasty , revival title also The Eternal Waltz – is a German film biography by Paul Verhoeven from 1954.

    Plot
During a guest performance in St. Petersburg, women fall at Johann Strauss’s feet and shower him with gifts. He, however, only has eyes for the young Olga, who in turn has been betrothed to Gregor Alexandrovich by her parents. Her father, in particular, is against his daughter’s relationship with Johann Strauss, but changes his mind when he hears him play. Without further ado, Johann Strauss is engaged to Olga, which in turn displeases Johann’s musicians. Fearing that they will have to leave him behind in St. Petersburg, they kidnap him and take him to the Austrian embassy. Here, Olga’s father finally realizes that Johann Strauss and his music belong in Vienna .

In Vienna, Johann Strauss sees a mysterious lady in a café and quickly composes a melody for her, which his valet Leibrock gives to her. A short time later, Johann Strauss is invited to a masked ball at Baron Todesco’s villa. There he meets the unknown woman again. She is the singer Henriette Treffz , who lives with Baron Todesco. She separates from Todesco and marries Johann Strauss. She is the one who inspires Strauss to compose operettas and is at his side when Emperor Franz Josef appoints the composer music director at the court ball. The Emperor is delighted to have in Strauss a counterpart to the Frenchman Jacques Offenbach . When Offenbach comes to Vienna, it is only with the help of both composers themselves that the tumult in the cafés is calmed, as the supporters of both camps engage in loud arguments over the pieces that the café bands are supposed to play.

On the advice of his wife, Strauss cast Maria Geistinger in the leading role for his operetta The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief . He fell in love with her and was with her while his wife died at home from a heart attack. Johann Strauss withdrew from public life with his valet. Some time later, at an evening hosted by Princess Metternich, he played the song Brüderlein fein ( Little Brothers) , performed by Alexander Girardi and the actress and singer Adele. Adele loved Johann Strauss and became his wife. She cared for him when he fell seriously ill a few years later and was at his side when he died. On the day of his death, his brother Eduard Strauss was conducting a jubilee concert. When valet Leibrock told him of his brother’s death, he interrupted the program and played the Blue Danube Waltz . The concert guests slowly rose from their seats.
