SYNOPSIS
The apparent tranquillity of a town whose main economic driver is its spa
is shattered when the Doctor discovers that the water is contaminated
by waste from nearby farms. Instead of resolving a serious public health
problem, the discovery sparks a conflict that brings economic interests,
power balances and moral convictions into play.
By exposing the truth and demanding a solution, the Doctor faces resistance
from the local authorities, led by the mayor, who is also his brother. The
press and much of the community choose to ignore the danger in order
to avert the town’s economic collapse. Those around him, including the
journalist Mario, and the businesswoman Marta, distance themselves under
collective pressure. His daughter Petra, however, becomes his only staunch
ally in defending the truth.
The confrontation comes to a head at a town meeting where local people,
manipulated by fear and vested interests, single out the Doctor as the cause
of the crisis, publicly stigmatising him as an ‘enemy of the people’. Deprived
of his job and targeted by widespread hostility, the doctor is isolated but
not defeated. When he learns that his father-in-law, Morten, invested all
his savings in the contaminated spa, the Doctor realises the extent to which
corruption has permeated the system. With Petra’s support, the Doctor
decides to stay in the town and resist, convinced that fleeing would mean
betraying the truth he has decided to defend.Quoted from Teatro Real
