ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The event began with a welcome from the Dean of the Cathedral, Juan Pedro Sánchez Gamero. Following this, the Archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Cerro Chaves , offered a prayer that helped those present prepare their ears, not only to appreciate the beauty of the music, but also to connect with its depths. Argüello himself then introduced the concert, explaining the profoundly catechetical and spiritual meaning of each movement of the symphonies.
The Symphonic Work, comprised of The Suffering of the Innocents and The Messiah , offers a profound musical meditation on the mystery of Christ’s Passion and the hope of the Resurrection. The first reflects on the pain of Christ and the suffering of the Virgin Mary; the second, a symphonic poem for piano, choir, and orchestra divided into three movements—Aquedah, Daughters of Jerusalem, and The Messiah, Lion to Conquer—is dedicated to the Christian martyrs. Argüello made special mention of the martyrs of the religious persecution of the 1930s in Toledo, specifically almost half of the clergy, and the importance of their attitude of forgiveness in death, which produced great fruits of holiness.
In 2010, Kiko Argüello composed his first symphony, The Suffering of the Innocents , a work in five movements that constitutes a profound meditation on the mystery of the death of Christ and the pain of the Virgin Mary.
Later, The Messiah culminates , a symphonic poem for piano, choir and orchestra, structured in three movements —Aquedah, Daughters of Jerusalem and The Messiah, Lion to Conquer— which form a triptych centered on the passion and suffering of Christ, dedicated to the Christian martyrs.
Messiah premiered on November 19, 2023, at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, with a rebroadcast on RAI5. In the Jubilee Year 2025, the Symphonic Work was presented at the “Parque della Musica” Auditorium in Rome on the occasion of the Jubilee of Families, marking the first time both compositions were performed together in the same evening.
