ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

El Pelele (the wimp), inspired by the eighteenth-century tonadilla, is a classic example of this aesthetic in which several Spanish composers and scholars of the time also participated. Its premiere in 1925 was accompanied by the recovery of two tonadillas from the 18th century, in an effort to renew this genre with Goyesque overtones. This production recovers the song and piano version by Gómez himself, performed on several occasions throughout the 1930s.

For his part, Stravinsky resorted to the plot of a story by Pushkin and the evocation of various styles of the past to compose Mavra. The composer himself participated on the piano in the preview of this opera, sponsored by Diaghilev, interpreting the version that is represented in this production.
