ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Revue in one act and four paintings, with music by Federico Chueca and Joaquín Valverde, based on a libretto by Ricardo de la Vega. It premiered on March 1, 1889 at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid
The year 1888 had been so rainy in Madrid that it gave rise to this “magazine”, a sparkling continuation of the successful magazine La Gran Vía. Many jokes refer to the carelessness of the municipal authorities and still have their grace, others are already outdated ; this work survives thanks to Chueca’s score, with his repertoire of dances, both regional and international. The well-known “mazurka of umbrellas” stands out.
Prelude and Chorus: “Let it rain, let it rain!”
Duo by Julio Ruiz and the dressmaker – Mazurka of the umbrellas: “Do me the favor of hearing two words from me”
Waltz of Neptune: “Of the seas, king they call me”
Choir and Parade: “Here comes the flower of Wonders”
Habanera de la Menegilda: “Listen, gentleman”
Parody of The Witch – Zortzico: “Oh baby of my soul”
Chotis: “What a holy virgin labyrinth of the O”
Waltz (Orchestra)
Chorus of the policemen: “We bring the bodies truzaus”
Dance at Liceo Rius – polka: “I was waiting for you at the tailor shop”
Apotheosis and Final: “Of the lights I am the one with the most chic”
