ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
It’s been around 50 years since a handful of composers in America set themselves the task of finding a new musical language of their own – away from the European avant-garde, which seemed too academic and cerebral, towards more sensuality and joy of sound. Minimal music was born. One of the best-known representatives from the outset was Philip Glass, who today, also thanks to numerous film scores for »The Truman Show« and »The Hours«, is one of the most successful American composers of all. With his first opera »Einstein on the Beach« in 1975 he wrote a true classic of minimal music. Now there is a rare opportunity to experience the work, which the Los Angeles Times recently described as “the most important opera of the last 50 years”, at the Elbphilharmonie.
»Einstein on the Beach« deals more associatively with the portrayal of what is probably the most famous physicist of all time. So there is no consistent plot, the violin, which Einstein himself mastered and which is said to have even served as a source of inspiration for his physical ideas, plays an important role in this. The Belgian Ictus Ensemble presents a three-hour version of this visionary opera in Hamburg. The narrator is the American singer Suzanne Vega, who became world famous with her songs “Tom’s Diner” and “Luka”.
