  Oedipus Rex

  Opera in 4 acts based on the work of Sophocles.

  After solving the riddles of the Sphinx, Oedipus is crowned King of Thebes and marries Jocasta, the queen. Now he faces a greater challenge: to find and punish the murderer of Laius – the king who preceded him on the throne of Thebes – who is cursing the city. But this quest may be more challenging and cruel than any riddle.

  In 2025, UNIOPERA proudly presents the world premiere of the opera OEDIPUS REX – with original music composed by Luciano Camargo and libretto by Rodolfo García Vázquez, based on the tragedy by Sophocles. Originally conceived to be sung in Portuguese, the opera was composed between 2013 and 2022 and will now have its first complete staging, conducted by the composer himself, Luciano Camargo, and with stage direction by librettist Rodolfo García Vázquez (Os Sátyros).

  The orchestra, choir, soloists, and the entire UNIOPERA Company are preparing for the greatest challenge in their history: the premiere of an entirely new opera, sung in Portuguese. Embark on this adventure, unraveling the mysteries surrounding the calamitous state of the city of Thebes and Oedipus’s frantic search for Laius’s murderer, which, in reality, transforms into a quest for his own identity.
