The opera is based on the historical events that led to the murder of Erik Glipping in 1286 . The king is an incorrigible skirt hunter, and when he seduces Ingeborg, married to Marsk Stig , the marsk arranges a conspiracy against the king. Marsk Stig is exiled, and Ingeborg commits suicide.
