Unlike previous works, this production focuses on Ahn Chang-ho, who is often remembered solely as a heroic independence activist. It explores the holistic nature of the human spirit, portraying him as a living, breathing, and relatable human being. A brilliant orator, educator, and loving father, he chose the pen over a gun, and the power of education and community over hatred. A practical idealist and a champion of solidarity and unity within the divided Provisional Government, he stands tall on stage as a figure who reawakens the lost value of communication in modern society.
The work goes beyond a simple biographical narrative, delicately portraying Dosan’s convictions and human struggles, which persisted even in the darkness of the times. His ethos of “cultivating oneself, cultivating one’s home, cultivating one’s country, and cultivating the world” resonates deeply in today’s world, rife with cynicism and division. The work is not merely a reflection on history; it is a song for the present and the future, a stage that allows us to encounter Dosan’s spirit anew.

The libretto was written by playwright Chu Jeong-hwa, and the music was composed by composer Kim Eun-hye, resulting in a 100% original work.
Ross Song conducted, and opera director Lee Hyo-seok directed. Tenors Baek In-tae and Kang Myung-bo play the protagonist Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, while sopranos Ahn Hye-soo, Kim Yu-jin, and Jeong Hye-min play Hye-ryeon. Baritone Jeong Kyung plays Ito, delivering powerful performances.
The film follows the life of Dosan Ahn Chang-ho, beginning with the young Dosan’s question, “Why is a war being waged in our country to take over our country?”

Believing that education is essential for a nation’s strength, he travels to the United States to study, where he teaches writing, organizes communities, and establishes the Public Association and Heungsadan. His journey to rebuild a shattered national spirit illuminates the path of an idealist who dreamed of independence through education and solidarity.
The question, “Whose island am I becoming now?” leads to profound reflection for each audience member.
