As part of Joburg Theatre’s 60th celebrations, Don Giovanni was presented on the Mande- la Stage. This world class Opera is produced as an in-house production directed by Dr. Christoph Dammann, who previously directed The Magic Flute in 2016, produced by Dr. Musa Nkuna. Mozart describes “Don Giovanni” as a drama giocoso, a “funny drama”. Musically we have an ingenious mixture of serious and comical op- era. The title character is a “dissolute, young nobleman”. Throughout the opera, Don Giovan- ni, the lover who used to be so successful, fails to seduce a woman. His magic no longer works, his dark, violent and misogynistic side emerges more strongly and is a deterrent to his love life. The aesthetics and design of our production are inspired by the “film noir” of the 1950s, with low-key lighting, strong light-dark contrasts and a few splashes of color.
