ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

Die Unschuldsvermutung is a 2021 Austrian comedy film directed by Michael Sturminger , who also wrote the screenplay and cast Ulrich Tukur , Laura de Boer , Marie-Christine Friedrich , Daniela Golpashin , and Catrin Striebeck in the leading roles . The conflicts surrounding a new production of Mozart ‘s Don Giovanni develop into a backstage comedy that depicts the Salzburg Festival in a “true style” yet “totally fictional” way, skillfully interweaving the film’s plot with the opera’s material.

The film was produced as part of the ORF television film series Stadtkomödie and premiered on September 8, 2021, as part of the Film Mittwoch series on Das Erste , but was previously released in the ARD Mediathek . The film was first shown on ORF on April 27, 2022.

Plot
The premiere of Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival is in jeopardy. The authoritarian opera director must be replaced after a fit of rage, and the festival management decides to hire a new conductor who is as high-profile as she is risky: Beate Zierau, the ex-wife of star conductor Marius Atterson; the simmering war of roses between the two could lead to a complete disruption of rehearsals at any time. Zierau and Atterson manage to sarcastically mask their animosity in front of the amused press – but not in front of the ensemble.

This is a complete disaster for the new director. She simply imposes her feminist interpretation on the characters and uses a current incident to simultaneously denounce the main character and her ex-husband as a notorious MeToo perpetrator who has no right to the presumption of innocence . This doesn’t put her at an disadvantage compared to the self-important, success-spoiled ” old white man .” He shamelessly hits on his agency assistant first and then a television journalist. His master student Karina Samus, who is pregnant with his child and intends to carry the child to term, ultimately shows solidarity with both women when they set a trap for him.

The journalist pretends to be captivated by Atterson’s charm and accepts his invitation to dinner in his hotel room, where she feigns lasciviousness and elicits the desired confessions from him, recording them on hidden camera. As she tries to escape, he falls and loses consciousness. Zierau joins him and, with a knockout, ensures that he finally experiences what it feels like to be replaced – in this case, for the upcoming public dress rehearsal. Samus steps in for him and masters the challenge with flying colors. The “Maestro” wants to conduct the premiere himself again, but now the two potential MeToo victims are putting pressure on the festival management with the incriminating footage. When Atterson is confronted with this, he withdraws in defeat
