When Abul Hasan, Nadim (confidante) of Caliph Harun ar-Raschid, squandered his fortune, he resorted to a trick to refill his coffers. He and his wife Nushat al Fuad (heart’s content) take turns playing dead in order to obtain money for the funeral from the caliph and his wife Subaida. The plan is working. But as Abul Hasan foresees, the fraud is exposed. Because the caliph, his wife, the bodyguard Masrur and the lady-in-waiting Umama get into an argument about who has actually died. During the on-site inspection in Abu Hasan’s house, they find both of them laid out dead. The dispute seems insoluble and the caliph becomes so angry that he promises a thousand dinars to the one who solves the problem. Abu Hasan wakes up instantly from the dead – solves the problem and is happy about the reward. According to Enno Littmann’s translation of the Calcutta manuscript, Sharazad tells this story on the 398th night.
