ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Julia Selina Blank and the Bavarian Radio Choir perform Maximilian Ossejewitsch Steinberg’s “Passion Week”. This is the last major sacred work in Russia after the October Revolution.
It stands in the tradition of the “New Russian Choir School” following Tchaikovsky’s Chrysostom Liturgy and Rachmaninoff’s Great Evening and Morning Praise. As a student of Rimsky-Korsakov and teacher of Shostakovich, Steinberg belongs to an in-between generation whose works are worth rediscovering today.
Conductor Julia Selina Blank, who comes from Upper Bavaria and lives in Oslo, where she directs the JSB Choir, which she founded, will be making her debut at the BR Choir’s subscription concerts. In 2021 she was among the finalists for the Eric Ericson Award and the German Music Council’s Choir Conductor Prize.
