ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Richard Wagner’s DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG can be experienced at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in a production by Jossi Wieler, Anna Viebrock and Sergio Morabito, in which they made the situation of a “society under the sign of music” the starting point of their conception. To do this, they relocated the master singers’ guild of late medieval Nuremberg to the hermetic world of a music college. This is dominated by powerful professors, attended by their “apprentice boys” and “apprentice girls,” and reformers like Hans Sachs and pedants like Sixtus Beckmesser, who is also applying for Eva’s hand, teach there. The only “non-musician” to break into this strictly regulated world is Walther von Stolzing. In doing so, he shakes up the strictly regulated, sometimes quirky, bizarre university world and at the same time becomes the driving force behind the comedy plot that unfolds.
