Roland Schimmelpfennig’s drama “The Arabian Night” is a modern stage fairy tale, which Christian Jost has musically expanded into a chamber opera. “Schimmelpfennig’s source material for my opera is, for me, a somnambulistic masterpiece,” the composer revealed at the world premiere in Essen’s Grillo Theater. The text tells of the summer heat in a high-rise housing estate after the collapse of the water supply. But in an apartment on the seventh floor, Franziska, a young woman with no memory, is showering. … From the dreams and nightmares of lonely, lovestruck city dwellers, Jost creates a piece that “once begun, sets everything in motion, allows it to blossom and fade, only to be reborn anew.”
