ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Ethel Smyth, born in 1858 in Sidcup, Kent, was an English composer and a significant figure in the British music scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her oeuvre includes operas, orchestral pieces, choral works, and chamber music. As a suffragette, Smyth was active in the women’s rights movement of her time.
DER WALD
“Der Wald” is a short opera in German, which premiered in 1902 at the then Prussian Court Opera. The story takes place in the Middle Ages, and the mistress of a forest leads a young woodcutter to his doom.
THE PRISON
is a symphony for soloists, choir, and orchestra. The protagonist of the story is an unnamed prisoner who, facing execution, grapples with the questions on the threshold between life and death.
