Christoph Ludwig Fehre (18) (18) January 1718 in Zehren ; † 28. October 1772 in Dresden) was a German composer and organist. Fehre was largely unknown until a few decades ago. Musicology has only been of interest to him since the end of the 20. Century it became known that the so-called “schoolmaster cantata” came from him. This composition, which is frequently performed in today’s school music, had previously been attributed to Georg Philipp Telemann.
Fehres Kantate The schoolmaster in the singing school for bass voice, boys’ choir and orchestra was considered to be Georg Philipp Telemann’s work (TWV 20:57) until 1995. Today, it is one of the most popular compositions for school use and has made a lasting impression on the image of the composer Telemann. In 1981, Hellmuth expressed doubts about Telemann’s authorship for the first time, ; they were confirmed in 1995 by Hans-Joachim Schulze.[ 6] The incipit of the piece is published in 1768 in a supplement to the Breitkopf catalogue under Fehre’s name; without Incipit, the title The Schoolmaster in the Singschule is also assigned in the catalogues of 1770 and 1836 Fehre.
Fehre composed the piece, which was first performed in July 1751, in celebration of the 50th anniversary. Service anniversary of his uncle and teacher Johann Christian Gerstner, who has been a cantor since 1701 first in Lommatzsch, from 1711 at St. Jacobi in Chemnitz and finally had been at the Annenkirche in Dresden since 1727. In the original came to us only the text book from 1751. The composition is handed down only in an instrumental arrangement by Christoph Ernst Friedrich Weyse (1774–1842) with two oboes and two horns, which shows an already classically oriented orchestral movement. A modern arrangement in four-part string replacement by Fritz Stein is common in today’s school use
