A chamber opera based on the film by Huang Hsin-Yao
Concert exam composition by Yixuan Hu (class of Prof. Elmar Lampson)

Two poor best friends – Nabel and Pickle. No one knows their real names behind these absurd nicknames. And quite frankly, no one cares. Day after day, they toil away in the Buddha factory of their boss, Kevin, an artist with divine ambitions.

Everyone knows Kevin’s name, everyone knows about his piety – but no one knows about his extravagant private life, and even fewer about his two faces: humble to those above, condescending to those below.

What Kevin doesn’t know: His racy dashcam videos are the highlight of every night shift for Nabel and Pickle in the boring gatehouse. One click, one listen – and suddenly not only humans are listening, but also the gods.

Even to what doesn’t want to be heard.

“The Great Buddha” is a chamber opera by Yixuan Hu, created as his final project for the concert exam in composition at the HfMT (University of Music and Theatre). The opera is adapted from the Taiwanese film “The Great Buddha” by Huang Hsin-Yao and combines dark humor with an artistic reflection on classism, religious hypocrisy, and violence against women.
