A drunken hunchback staggers across the streets, a Chinese couple invites him over, and the hunchback suffocates on a fish. The hosts, a couple of Chinese tailors, want to get rid of the body and put it in front of the door of a Jewish doctor. The doctor, who wants to earn the offered dinar, stumbles over the dead man in the dark and considers himself guilty of his death. On the advice of his servant, he lets the corpse quietly down into the courtyard of the Muslim neighbor. He, in turn, a baker, hits the supposed fat thief over the head with the pan. He too thinks himself horrified as the murderer, drags the corpse into an inanimate street and leans him against a tree. A drunken Christian scribe believes he recognizes a lurking mugger and beats the defenseless person until he is caught by the night watchman. The clerk is said to be hanged as a murderer, especially since the hunchback was a friend of the Chinese emperor. But this does not occur. The Muslim, the Jew and the Chinese exonerate him and one another in turn. Just before the death sentence is due to be carried out on the first in the chain – the Chinese tailor – the hangman discovers that there is no reason for a death sentence. The hunchback is alive, you just have to pull the fish out of his neck like a cork. All’s well that ends well.
