Denis & Katya tells the startling true story of a teenage couple. Tragically unfolding events make us think about how we tell stories and how they might be colored on the internet.
The impressive work premiered at the Philadelphia Opera in the fall of 2019, and has since received several successful premieres around the world. The piece won the Fedora Generali Prize for Opera in 2019 and the Ivor Novello Award in 2020.
In November 2016, Denis Murayov and Katya Vlasova started live streaming on the Periscope website, witnessing the harsh fate of the last days of the teenage couple. As the hours progressed, Denis and Katya continued to stream, the number of online viewers continued to grow, and the speculation on the Internet grew wilder. Ville Rusanen and Mari Palo play the main roles in the opera, and the cellists of the National Opera play on stage.
