ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Death of the Mouse is loosely based on something that actually happened in my life. On my 25th birthday, I didn’t make any plans, perhaps either out of laziness, busyness, self-sabotage or all three. Instead, I decided to hang out with a friend of mine, but before I got to the place, I encountered a mouse that was, as Stu in the opera puts it: “freezing in the middle of the sidewalk”.
Normally, I’d have walked right past it, but that day, the existential birthday spiral pulled me in. We would like to believe we’d help a mouse, or if not a mouse, maybe a cat, dog, or person, but would we really? And if we wouldn’t, where do we draw the line? And lastly, if we don’t help, does empathy with no action even make a difference? That moment got me thinking about connection, or lack thereof, between people, animals and everything in-between. If there’s one thing I hope Death of the Mouse leaves you with, it’s this: No matter how impossible true connection may seem, the act of striving for it is what makes life worth living.
Also, my 26th birthday was way more fun 🙂
