  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE

In Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, around 1850, there was the “Elysium Theater,” run by the world-famous director Friedrich Eduard Dannenberg (who was a transport worker by day). His audience consisted of “ordinary people” who, of course, spoke Low German at the time. This circumstance, coupled with the theater’s extremely limited budget, forced Dannenberg to thoroughly rework the classics he wanted to perform. One day, he was a little inspired, and he included Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz in the program.

The Hamburger Abendblatt and Sabine Tomzig were enthusiastic: “What an atmosphere! Three exclamation marks aren’t enough. People, storm the playhouse on Büschstraße!… You can only find something like this in Hamburg!” DER SPIEGEL reported in No. 18 on April 30, 1979, “Lorelei in Poppenbüttel.” Walter Schröder of BILD Hamburg awarded it 5 out of 6 stars: “Plattish Freischütz – there’s no dry eye… you rarely leave a theater feeling so happy!” Christa Knauer in the Harburger Anzeiger: “The Bruutschuss is a pure delight! … Director Michael Leinert, a Low German expert with a famous mischievous streak, has crafted a sparkling, polished piece of fun for the present.” dpa correspondent Joachim Redetzki notes: “Now it’s time, the people of the Hamburg State Opera are singing in Low German! The audience cheers when, for example, tenor Heinz Kruse (the only professional from the State Opera) belts out “through the woods through the meadows” in Low German…!” Hamburger Morgenpost (Ludwig Pollner): “Good hunting – Der Freischütz has hit the mark! Bravo to Michael Leinert (text and direction) and the “Orchestra” under Gerhard Jünemann for jazz and shanties as “additional bonus.” Well, if that isn’t a hit!” DIE WELT (Lutz Lesle): “An evening practically bursting with grotesque ideas, situational comedy…!” Bremer Nachrichten (Gerhard Asche): wrote his review in the best of Bremen dialect! “The audience screamed with delight, and I have to say, I haven’t laughed so much at the opera in a long time.” Theater becomes wonderful fun! said the Holsteiner Courier.
