ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Hans Werner Henze’s children’s opera Pollicino, an adaptation of the “Hansel and Gretel” fairy tale, has become a classic since its premiere with productions in theaters and schools worldwide. Written for the “Concentus Politianus”, an instrumental ensemble consisting of 15 children, the roles of children and animals are actually intended to be sung and played by children. Only the adult roles (parent couple, cannibal couple, wolf) are reserved for adult singers. The same applies to the orchestra. Apart from the piano, harmonium and the concertante violin, which “are played by teachers or other adults”, children play “instruments that are available to the Concentus Politianus, founded in early 1979: recorders, guitars, a couple of violins, plus the instruments of the ‘ Orff-Schulwerks’.”
