ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The first performance took place in Venice on February 28, 1850 at the Teatro San Benedetto. The opera was very famous in Italy and abroad throughout the second half of the nineteenth century
Crispino is a poor cobbler who can’t make ends meet. A mysterious woman, the comare, appears to him and encourages him to pursue a career as a doctor, although he cannot even read. Crispino, with the magical help of his wife, succeeds, managing to predict the healings of Bortolo and Lisetta and the death of Asdrubale. Prosperity, however, goes to his head and he begins to mistreat his wife Annetta. The comare makes him understand his sins and threatens him with death: Crispino repents and returns to harmony with Annetta.
