    Quote from bzb.ro
Braşov is inseparably linked to the great Romanian musician who lived here between 1881 and 1883, and worked as conductor of the choir of the “St. Nicolae” from Schei and the Romanian Gymnastics and Singing Association and, as experts say, he had the most prolific creative period in his artistic life.
Also in Braşov, Ciprian Porumbescu recorded the immense success of staging the first Romanian operetta, composed by him, “Crai Nou”, based on the text of the play by the poet Vasile Alecsandri. The first performance of the work took place on February 27, 1882, with the composer at the conductor’s desk, in the Festive Hall of the Romanian Gymnasium (today, the “Andrei Şaguna” National College), a prestigious educational institution, and the extremely favorable reception of the performance led to scheduling, the very next day, on February 28, 1882, another performance.
The operetta combines gaiety with poetry in an extremely tonic Romanian atmosphere and develops a popular myth that says that the new moon can bring happiness to lovers. The work is, in fact, a joke, in which a steward is tricked by two young men, helped by the peasants from the mountains. Anica, the granddaughter of this manager, and Leonaş run away from home to get married, but are wanted by the manager and the gendarmes. Protected by Dochiţa and Moş Corbu, they manage to hide so that, in the end, the Steward gets engaged to them.
