  Few works represent the splendor of Hispanic Baroque musical theatre with such brilliance as Coronis, a score attributed to Sebastián Durón, one of the most outstanding figures of Spanish music from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Maestro of the Royal Chapel during the reigns of Charles II and Philip V, Durón developed a personal language in which the Hispanic theatrical tradition and the influences of Italian opera and French music converge, giving rise to a style of great expressive richness and extraordinary musical quality. Preserved in an anonymous manuscript in the National Library of Spain, Coronis remained forgotten for more than three centuries. Musicological studies carried out in recent decades have allowed the work to be attributed to Durón and its composition to be placed in the early years of the 18th century, in a context marked by the War of the Spanish Succession and the profound political and cultural changes that transformed the Madrid court. The libretto is freely inspired by the classical myth of Coronis, although it departs from ancient sources to construct a drama in which love, power and jealousy articulate the action. The nymph Coronis becomes the center of the dispute between Neptune and Apollo, while Triton, a figure of extraordinary dramatic force, triggers much of the conflicts in the work. As is characteristic of Spanish Baroque theater, the main plot coexists with scenes starring comic characters who provide a humorous counterpoint and bring the action closer to the audience.

  From a musical point of view, Coronis reveals the mastery of a fully mature composer. Durón naturally alternates recitatives, arias, choirs and dances, building a dynamic theatrical discourse full of contrasts. The vocal writing stands out for its expressiveness, while the orchestra actively participates in the dramatic action through a rich variety of colors and timbre resources that evoke both the marine world and the supernatural dimension of the gods. Although traditionally considered a zarzuela, Coronis is presented entirely sung, without spoken dialogue, a circumstance that brings it closer to the concept of an opera. This uniqueness makes it one of the most ambitious examples of Hispanic musical theater of its time and a fundamental piece for understanding the evolution of the European lyrical scene in the first decades of the 18th century. The recovery of Coronis has allowed a work of extraordinary artistic value to be restored to the repertoire, testimony to the creativity and sophistication achieved by the musical Baroque in the Iberian Peninsula. More than three hundred years after its composition, it continues to surprise with the strength of its dramaturgy, the richness of its music and the ability to combine tradition and modernity in a language of unmistakable personality.
