Acrobates, dancers, musicians and singers bring this Spanish zarzuela back to life in a flamboyant and carnival scene designed by Omar Porras. In the pit, The Harmonic Poem directed by Vincent Dumestre carries with fervor this zarzuela, emblematic genre of the abounding Spanish Golden Age: popular songs, sumptuous choirs, poignant lamenti, great airs prefiguring opera seria.
Drawing its sources from Ovid, Sebastián Durón recounts the adventures of the nymph Coronis which exacerbates rivalries and lusts in Apollo and Neptune. He sends his son, Triton, a hasty but angry sea monster. Then unleash themselves battles and celestial triumphs, divine sacrifices and avenging tidal waves. To tell the story of this fight of the gods, Omar Porras imagines them as wrestlers, a kind of gladiators of modern times, and relies on all the springs of the theater machinery (pyrotechnics, flights, apparitions…), offering a virtuoso show, real theater in the theater.
An unknown masterpiece, Coronis is awarded to the first organist and master of the then royal chapel in Madrid: Sebastián Durón, whom musicians and musicologists finally save from forgetfulness today. For this new production, the Théâtre de Caen brought together Omar Porras and Vincent Dumestre. A duo as obvious! If Omar Porras finds here his native language, Vincent Dumestre, him, has made the southern repertoire his favorite field. Don’t miss this new creation of the theatre in Caen!
