ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The concert opens with the Overture from I vespri siciliani and Cuniza’s aria from the second act of Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio , accompanied by Azucena’s aria from Il trovatore “Condotta ell’era in catene”, both by Verdi. The concert continues with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas, a symphonic poem inspired by the ballad of the same name by Goethe and chosen, in 1940, to accompany the short film starring Mickey Mouse included in the film Fantasia . We return to Verdi with the aria of the Princess of Eboli from Don Carlo “O don fatale”. The evening will close with two symphonic works: Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky, performed in the version reworked and orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov, and the suite from the ballet Belkis, Queen of Sheba by Ottorino Respighi. The first is a symphonic poem that musically describes a witches’ sabbath on Bald Mountain during the night of San Giovanni. The second is a suite that Respighi took from the ballet of the same name for which he composed the music in 1931, and which staged the journey made in the desert by the biblical figure of the Queen of Sheba, eager to test the wisdom of King Solomon.
