    PROGRAMME

Johannes Brahms: Vier ernste Gesänge (“Four Serious Songs”), Op. 121

This cyclical centerpiece features four biblical texts chosen by Brahms as he anticipated the death of his close friend Clara Schumann.
    • “Denn es gehet dem Menschen wie dem Vieh” (It is for man as it is for the beast) — Ecclesiastes 3:19–22
    • “Ich wandte mich und sahe an alle, die Unrecht leiden” (I turned and looked upon all who suffer injustice) — Ecclesiastes 4:1–3
    • “O Tod, wie bitter bist du” (O death, how bitter you are) — Sirach 41:1–2
    • “Wenn ich mit Menschen- und mit Engelzungen redete” (Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels) — 1 Corinthians 13:1–3, 12–13
    Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Selected Romances
The second half of the performance transitioned into a series of Tchaikovsky’s classical Russian art songs, which highlights Almas Švilpa’s expressive bass-baritone weight and Nijolė Ralytė’s intricate accompaniment. [1]
    • “None but the Lonely Heart” (Net, tolko tot, kto znal), Op. 6, No. 6
    • “Don Juan’s Serenade” (Serenada Don Zhuana), Op. 38, No. 1
    • “Amid the Din of the Ball” (Sred’ shumnovo bala), Op. 38, No. 3
    • “I Bless You, Forests” (Blagoslovlyayu vas, lesa), Op. 47, No. 5
