ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Works by Russian composers who took Ostrovsky’s plays as the basis of their operatic works were performed. This part of the project is of particular importance, since it highlighted the work of Ostrovsky not only as an outstanding phenomenon in the history of Russian drama theater and Russian literature, but also as a phenomenon that influenced the rapid development of related arts in Russia. Few people know that the opera composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky began his career with Ostrovsky’s plays (the opera Voyevoda), that another major Russian composer Anton Arensky wrote his first opera based on the same drama, that the drama The Thunderstorm inspired the composition Katya Kabanov” – one of the most repertoire Western operas on the Russian theme by the Czech classic Leoš Janáček, and that Rimsky-Korsakov’s most famous fairy-tale opera “The Snow Maiden” is also the child of the composer and playwright’s joint work. This musical and theatrical composition became the culmination of Ostrovsky’s whole day, as it highlighted the intertextual connections of his work: with musical theater, salon life, folk art.
