Why do you have to close down operaonvideo.com?
I am 84 and my health and abilities are accordingly. And it is not going to get better.
After almost 10 years of running Opera on Video single-handed, it is time for a change to reduce my excessive workload.
The website operaonvideo.com is continuously and excessively flooded by hackers, bad bots and website scrapers.
It is hit by frequent DOS (Denial of service) attacks which cause severe performance problem and more hard work.
This requires a very powerful and expensive infrastructure to be able to cope with the huge amount of server load this causes.
It also causes significant technical risks to operate the server.
And it is very labor intensive and very expensive to defend against all these attacks.
This results in substantial financial burden.
Why do you close operaonvideo.com but continue with operaonvideo.ch?
Operaonvideo.com is a website open to the public, indexed by Google and other search engines.
Operonvideo.ch is a private website only accessible by logged-in users. It is not indexed by Google and other search engines.
Few hackers and bots hit operaonvideo.ch.
Because of this it runs on a much lighter and inexpensive server.
operaonvideo.ch is very easy to maintain and cost effective.
After one year operation of operaonvideo.ch we know from actual experience that the difference compared to operaonvideo.com is incredibly huge.
How long will operaonvideo.ch be available?
My current plan is to continue at least to 2030, health allowing.
I intend to continue updating the OperaonVideo database by adding all important opera and concert performances.
And to provide links to videos of these performances.
Could not somebody else continue running operaonvideo.com?
I have not received any satisfying proposal from someone with appropriate skills, adequate resources and profound opera knowledge to continue with Opera on Video instead of me.
I am already a Premium Donor. Will there be any change for me?
No. There are no changes to operaonvideo.ch or Premium Donors.
You can continue to access operaonvideo.ch as usual.
I am a registered donor on operaonvideo.com. Can I access operaonvideo.ch with my login?
No. First you have to make a Premium donation.
Then you register with operaonvideo.ch to get a new login there.
Why is the minimum premium donation 50 Swiss Francs, when the minimum was 10 on operaonvideo.ch
Operaonvideo.ch is intended to be exclusive for the real opera enthusiasts and opera professionals.
It is not intended for occasional users.
Operaonvideo.ch does not have any adverts and has much less users.
Thus it generates less contributions to cover expenses.
I do not think a onetime payment of minimum 50 is very much.
Over two years this is less than 3$ per month.
Can my previous donation be used to reduce my Premium donation?
Sorry, no.
