ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
The Christmas story: It’s Mary and Joseph with the child Jesus in the stable, the shepherds in the field, the Wise Men from the East, King Herod, and the flight to Egypt.
In the pre-industrial age, people were filled with the belief that there was an intangible, ordering force, a tension between heaven and earth. With the arrival of the Savior, the anticipation of eternal life was also celebrated.
However, all of these stories originated in the 16th century. In Central Germany, the practice developed of musically performing the Gospel readings on church holidays, with assigned roles. Rogier Michael’s (1553–1623) Christmas Story is one of the pioneering works of 17th-century German-language sacred music.
The Story is not intended for the grand stage, but in itself it is a perfect piece of music, nourished by a profound intuition and primal trust in divine order and justice, which brings hope and promises deeply personal comfort even in the here and now.
