ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
Heinrich Schütz’s Christmas Story
The central theme is the colorful Christmas story by Heinrich Schütz, the grand master of the German early baroque, who died 350 years ago. He learned the trade in Venice, but brilliantly adapted the new Italian style to the German language. Everything is discussed in his Weihnachtshistorie : the stable, the star, the angels, the shepherds and the Wise Men from the East.
Eighteen-voiced beauty
In addition, the internationally acclaimed ensemble, conducted by Lionel Meunier, will perform a number of German Christmas motets by Schütz and by his somewhat younger contemporary Andreas Hammerschmidt. The imposing, eighteen-voice Magnificat by Johann Rosenmüller sounds like a radiant peak on the Christmas tree , who, like Schütz, had turned his light on the magicians of color in Venice.
