Quote from BR:
A portrait of the baritone Christian Gerhaher
The baritone Christian Gerhaher is currently one of the most sought-after song and opera singers. For his 90-minute documentary, Eckhart Querner accompanied the internationally renowned star to celebrated performances in Munich and on concert tours to Switzerland and New York for almost a year. The film author interviewed famous conductors and musician colleagues, but was also able to accompany Christian Gerhaher with his camera on his visits to his homeland in Lower Bavaria and when he was working with students.

Christian Gerhaher, 44 years old, comes from Straubing in Lower Bavaria and studied medicine and singing in Munich. In his portrait, the BR filmmaker Eckhart Querner tells the story of a man whose extraordinary talent was initially not recognized even by world singers such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Without prominent support, Gerhaher, together with his long-time pianist Gerold Huber, made their way to the top.

Christian Gerhaher now knows countless concert and opera stages throughout Europe, Asia and the USA. In recent years he has received awards such as the Gramophone Award, the Echo Klassik and the Faust Theater Prize.

In the 2012/2013 season he was Artist in Residence with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and in the current season with the Berlin Philharmonic. Director Eckhart Querner accompanied and observed the baritone on concert tours, in his Lower Bavarian homeland and at work with his students for almost a year. The result is a portrait of a person who is celebrated as a highly sensitive, exceptional artist by listeners and the press, but who is also repeatedly plagued by self-doubt.

Christian Gerhaher’s friend and pianist Gerold Huber, the conductors Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding and Herbert Blomstedt also have their say in the film.
