CHINA DOLL is a story of deceit, feigned pregnancy, smug mothers, whisky and sex. It is the story of Nina. Alone, childless and barren, she swindles a young boy into staying with her by feigning pregnancy, placing a china doll where her own flesh and blood should be. Observed closely by her landlady and confidante, Ana, who relishes Nina’s broken life, mocking and jibing only to distract herself from her own troubles. The opera goes on to explore the personification of the doll and the effects of lying and deceit on a loving relationship. This is mirrored by a chorus of four – two couples who are going through the motions of a ‘normal’ relationship: they meet, fall in love, conceive and give birth to healthy babies.
