As the highlight of her residency at the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival 2021, the conductor and soprano Barbara Hannigan gives a concert entitled Chiaroscuro: The contrast between light and dark determines the choice of music. “Light” works by Stravinsky, Haydn and Gershwin meet “dark” works by Schönberg and Ives.
At the climax of her week-long residency, Barbara Hannigan, together with the festival orchestra, devotes herself entirely to the play of light and shadow. Hannigan, who is both a soprano and a conductor, borrows this source of inspiration from a style of baroque painting. In the program of the same name, the high-contrast »chiaroscuro« is translated into two consecutive concerts. “Bright Lights” offers optimistic sounds and memorable melodies – be it with Igor Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella”, Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 90” or George Gershwin’s suite from “Girl Crazy”, in which Barbara Hannigan is, so to speak, doubles as the singing conductor.
In contrast, the second part, “The Dark Side”, with Arnold Schönberg’s “Transfigured Night” and Claude Vivier’s “Lonely Child” brings out the beauty of melancholy. The “everlasting question about existence” opens the evening: “The Unanswered Question” by Charles Ives reveals the impossibility of an answer and leaves the audience musically in a state of limbo.
